The PED system: A sustainable filtration solution

Filter and reuse contaminated waste water efficiently, safely and according to regulations for irrigation purposes. The Precision Effluent Dispersal (PED) system offers this sustainable solution. Conceived in response to a water issue at an Irish poultry processing plant. Bevo International and Bosta UK joined forces and designed this installation.

Discharging effluent sustainably

The need for a suitable filtration system at the poultry processing plant in question was urgent. Processing resulted in more emissions of harmful substances from waste water than the government allowed. In addition, the hundreds of ducks held there produced waste in the form of slurry, which contains substances including high levels of sulphate and nitrate that are harmful to nature and ecosystems. The waste water from the processing plant was pumped into the nearby river.

The situation was not sustainable and had become a burden on the local ecosystem, which ultimately prompted the local authorities to reject plans for the expansion of the poultry processing plant.

System requirements

Bosta was commissioned to devise a turnkey solution to provide the poultry processing plant with a system that met the licensing committee’s requirements.

The system:

  • Should not harm the land.
  • Should not cause any harm to the local ecosystem.
  • Needs to control and manage flow, water volume and land saturation.
The duck farm also had a number of requirements. For example, the system had to be remotely controllable, while also enabling the reuse of water. The company also wanted assurance that the system would continue to meet the requirements set by the licensing committee for the next fifteen years.

“The Drip Irrigation System has been a tremendous success for Silver Hill. We researched a lot of alternative solutions in conjunction with the EPA in trying to find a sustainable solution for our treated water discharge. Once we settled on drip irrigation as being the optimal solution, we then worked with Bosta to design and develop a pilot phase. We were very impressed by the quality of work they carried out, the knowledge they had on the system and the overall success of the pilot. After the EPA licenced the system for the 9 plots of land, Bosta seamlessly delivered the project plan in the summer of 2023 and installed the largest drip irrigation system in Europe. This system now works successfully, and our staff are trained to maintain and manage the system for the years ahead. What was necessitated out of legislative change has turned into an opportunity for Silver Hill to install a state of the art, environmentally safe and sustainable wastewater management system that we are very proud to pioneer."

Bevo's solution: The PED system

This is the PED system

A solution in the form of a system that filters the substances contained in waste water, thereby reducing them to acceptable levels in relation to both the ecosystem and legal standards. It simultaneously enables reuse of the water. This consequently rendered the company a sustainable player.

The system comprises an underground drip-feed system that is coupled to the company's aeration and purification system. Bevo carried out the complete installation, from connection to the processing plant's tank to the drip lines, to anything else required along the way. This included filtration, automatic backwash, pump, control panel, interfaces, test wells, and humidity and weather sensors.

Custom designed system

Bevo carried out the complete design and installation. From connection to the processing plant's tank to the drip lines and anything else required along the way.

Bevo installed a remote-controlled control panel in the pump house. Water suction, filtration and pumping happens automatically. The custom designed emitters control the volume and flow of water in the field.

"The PED is an innovative system that really puts the customer ahead of the game."
Scott Parry, Bevo projects specialist

Suitable for other applications

The PED system is suitable for implementation in other sectors. For example, it has already been installed at a campsite, where waste water from toilets is purified and reused.

However, the system is suitable for filtering and irrigation purposes in numerous other industries. Speak to Bevo’s experts. We will run all the available options by you.
