The Rain Bird Soil moisture sensor, type SMRT-YI should be used in combination with a controller. The sensor has to be buried in the soil and can withstand cold temperatures and is corrosion resistant.
The SMRT-YI moisture sensor is compatible with any sensor like the ESP-ME, ESP-RZX, TBOS and WPX as well as other controllers. This item is sold as a kit so it comes with 2 items. The controller user interface and the in Ground soil moisture sensor. The sensor takes measurements of the soil's water content every 10 minutes and by doing so it will interrupt or allow the incoming irrigation cycle, this will allow up to 40% of savings in water.
