Irrigate asparagus effectively with drip irrigation

It is a priority for every asparagus grower to utilise scarce water in an efficient way. The challenge? To distribute water in a durable way and at the same time achieve the best yield from the crop. Dry seasons don't make that any easier. A successful asparagus harvest is within reach when irrigating with a drip irrigation system. Bevo tells you what you need to know.

Asparagus cultivation and drip irrigation

In asparagus cultivation, additional irrigation is a crucial success factor, especially on light soils with low water capacity. Watering during the growing season increases yield and harvest quality. The main advantages of a drip irrigation system for asparagus are that they can be planted more quickly and the young shoots are fully developed.

The benefits of drip irrigation:
  • Energy savings through low pressure
  • Water savings through less evaporation
  • Saving of pesticides through healthy plants
  • Irrigation of the asparagus is less time consuming

Solutions in asparagus cultivation

Flying drip irrigation

With drip irrigation, a distinction is made between flying and underground installation. In the case of flying installation, the drip lines are located between the ridges of the cultivated asparagus. The method is characterised by an even distribution of water and low material costs, but is only suitable to a limited extent for sandy soils.

Underground drip irrigation

Buried pressure-compensating drip hoses place water right at the root and fertilise at the same time, giving you maximum yields. This method is also called subsurface irrigation. When planting, the drip hoses are laid close to the roots and remain in the ground throughout growth.

Save labour and fertiliser

Soluble fertilisers are transported directly to the root area using the drip hose. With drip irrigation, you supply your plants regardless of wind conditions, your areas remain walkable and the foliage stays dry, which reduces susceptibility to diseases.
