Help cherry growers with under-watering

A series of hot summers force cherry growers to use water sparingly. That is quite a challenge because cherries need much moisture. Therefore a single irrigation system is not sufficient. Sprinklers and reels waste too much water. The solution is precision irrigation in combination with under-watering.

Releases the right water amount for the plant

Prevents from plant diseases , night frost and weeds

Allows growers to meet government requirements for water use

Targeted irrigation with drip hose

For growers a successful harvest depends completely on the manner of irrigation. Too much water is an open invitation for fungi and weeds. Sparingly irrigation opens the way for night frost. Choose the middle ground with a drip irrigation system.

Inline irrigation is suitable for cherry trees on the open ground. The drippers are worked into the hose and release the amount of water that is desired. Install this release system at 40 to 50 centimetres and be ensured that all roots will be reached.

Solutions in cherries irrigation

Adjust the system

The older the trees are, the larger they become. That means that they need more water in a later stage. A single hose does not have enough power for that.

So, we advise to install a second drip hose. Choose for a thicker pipe and a pump with more capacity and a higher water pressure.

Under-watering against night frost

The main enemy of the cherry blossom is night frost. This battle is fought in the spring, during the blossom period. Growers with low trunk trees must protect the buds against frost then.

Bosta advises under-watering with sprinklers. With a low pressure you only reach the lower buds and leaves so that the chance for fungus remains limited. It also keeps the soil at better temperature. That way the frost has no chance.

Automated irrigation

Growers have not been allowed to water indiscriminately for a long time. The government poses all kinds of restrictions on irrigation. So, the irrigation method must be calculated precisely. Without causing it to be the last drop.

Keep an eye on that ‘last drop’ with the use of moisture sensors. Via an app the grower can also see from a distance what the status of the soil is. Adjustment can be done with a single press of a button.
