Precision irrigation to grow first rate tulips

The most beautiful tulips linger in your mind after you passed them by car. The fields full of bright colours, clear contrasts and voluminous bulbs stay etched on your retina. Growers that irrigate the bulb targeted and in measured amounts of water, achieve these results. Drip tape helps with that. Utilise this system optimally to grow the best possible tulips. Bevo explains how.

Precise targeting decreases water use

Prevents from plant diseases by keeping the leaves dry

Ensures optimal quality of the tulips

Above ground irrigation

The European climate is very suitable for flower bulbs. That makes it possible to grow tulips on the open ground.

For these growers Bosta advises irrigation material such as drip tape. Water is taken directly to the seed of the plant in drops. The grower counteracts waste of water and has more influence on the growing process. Install the tape above ground in between the beds. The material lasts – depending on the variety that you choose – two to four years, so it must be replaced periodically. It would be inefficient to dig it up then.

Underground irrigation

Are you looking for irrigation material that lasts longer without maintenance, then install a drip irrigation system with wider hoses or pipes of for instance 16mm. Install these underground. Moisture will find its way up because of the capillary function of the earth. The material lasts ten to twenty years so the grower does not need to attend to it and has time for other jobs.

Experimenting for the perfect composition

No matter if the grower irrigates above ground or underground, he decides himself the ingredients that he adds to the mix to get the most beautiful tulips. With precision irrigation he administers the fertiliser and the water in measured quantities. Experiment on one hectare with a different drip time. With more water or less water. More or less fertiliser. The grower is the bartender who tests, tastes, and creates until he has found the perfect mixture. The result is his harvest. The consumer is his satisfied referent.

Save water

Reels and sprinklers spew water of which a large amount does not reach the intended destination. With drip irrigation the water goes directly to the root zone and the drops find their target fast. Growers that moisturise in this way use half as much water than their colleagues who drive around with a reel. And with this precise way of irrigation the leaves stay dry. That decreases the chance of fungal diseases and weeds.
