Benefits of drip irrigation

With drip irrigation water is taken to the potato plant through a system of pipes, drippers and hoses.

This precision irrigation system:

     • Drips the water immediately in the root zone. This eliminates waste.

     • Ensures that the leaves and the soil remain dry. Weeds and fungi are things of the past.

     • Can be managed automatically and from a distance. Irrigation of the potatoes is less time consuming.

Benefits of drip irrigation

Drip irrigation to water the potatoes

Just as much as the baker depends on the optimal ratio in his ingredients and a perfectly set oven to yield the best tasting bread, the growers depend on irrigation in the correct amounts to get the best out of a potato crop.

The most suitable match for irrigation of potatoes is drip irrigation.

We will highlight two varieties:

  1. uniform irrigation with drip tape
  2. underground irrigation

Uniform irrigation with drip tape

A potato grower does not distinguish between their plants. With drip tape they can be sure that all the seedlings are fed at the same time. It also is easy to install.

Place the hose in the ridges and skip a row every time so that you save on material. Because of the gradual way of watering, the soil becomes saturated. The earth holds on to the moisture for a longer time.

Underground irrigation

A durable solution is underground irrigation. That works the same as above ground dripping, but then the hoses are buried at a depth of 40 centimetres, with a separation of 75 centimetres – exactly the distance between the potato plants.

All plants are reached due to the capillary function of the soil. The big advantage: There is hardly any maintenance. So, this is a one-off investment.
